Crassula muscosa

Watch Chain / Lizard's Tail

Complete Care Guide

🌵 About This Plant

Crassula muscosa, commonly known as Watch Chain, Lizard's Tail, or Princess Pine, is a unique South African native prized for its intricate, geometric appearance. Its tiny, scale-like leaves are densely packed around the stems, creating a look that resembles a fine jewelry chain.

☀️ Light & Temperature

  • Optimal Light: It thrives in bright, filtered light. While it can handle some direct morning sun, intense midday sun can "bleach" the plant or cause it to turn a stressed reddish-brown.
  • Stretching: If the plant isn't getting enough light, the "chain" segments will grow further apart, making the plant look sparse.
  • Temperature: It prefers moderate temperatures. In very high heat, the plant may go semi-dormant to conserve moisture.

💧 Watering Routine

  • The Balance: Unlike "chunky" succulents, the Watch Chain has thinner stems and can dry out a bit faster.
  • Summer: Water thoroughly when the top 2-3 cm of soil is dry.
  • Winter: Reduce watering significantly, only providing enough to prevent the stems from becoming brittle and snapping.
  • Humidity: It handles average home humidity well but requires good air circulation to prevent fungal issues.

🪺 Growth Habit & Potting

  • Form: It grows as a spreading, bushy groundcover or a trailing plant. It reaches about 15–20 cm in height before the stems begin to trail over the sides of the pot.
  • Container Choice: It looks excellent in mixed succulent arrangements where it can act as "filler," or in small hanging baskets.
  • Soil: Use a standard succulent mix amended with extra perlite or fine grit for aeration.

⚠️ Common Issues

  • Dropping Segments: Usually caused by extreme underwatering (the plant becomes brittle) or a sudden shock in temperature.
  • Blackened Stems: A sign of overwatering or "wet feet." If the base turns black and mushy, take healthy tip cuttings immediately to save the plant.
