Drimiopsis maculata is a deciduous, bulbous perennial that provides a wonderful leafy contrast. It is primarily grown for its attractive, heart-shaped green foliage which is heavily "mottled" with dark green to purple-black spots, resembling a leopard's coat.
The plant grows from small, greenish bulbs that often sit partially above the soil. In spring and summer, it produces spikes of small, white to cream-colored flowers that are subtle but elegant. As a deciduous plant, it may go dormant and lose its leaves in the winter, only to return with fresh, spotted growth in the spring.
If the leaves start to lose their spots and become solid green, the plant is likely in a spot that is too dark. Move it to an area with slightly more indirect light to bring back the "leopard" markings.
